AMERICACHARTERS OF FREEDOM’:  THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, US CONSTITUTION, BILL OF RIGHTS

The simple truth at the heart of the American Revolution is that people are born with certain natural rights, including “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”…that do not come from Presidents or Kings.
These and other rights of the American people are secured by America’s founding documents: The Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights…the Charters of Freedom, guarded 24/7 and on permanent display in the Rotunda of the National Archives building.

The Charters of Freedom were drafted in the heat of dramatic, fast-moving events. They represented a monumental achievement to the nation’s Founders who believed their experiment in self-government held the promise of liberty for all mankind.

The principles established in the Charters have bound the nation together through more than two centuries of growth and turmoil. American Patriots of every generation have paid in blood to defend these principles.

The three Charters of Freedom chronicle the creation of the Charters and their impact on events in this country and around the world. They reveal the story of earlier generations of Americans who had both the VISION to see a better world and the AUDACITY to build it.

IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THESE PRINCIPLES FOR OUR GENERATION AND POSTERITY!

The Declaration of Independence, written in 1776, announces a complete break with Britain and expresses the ideals on which the United States was founded: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The Constitution is the supreme law of the United States. These four large sheets of parchment define the framework and powers of the federal government. Written in 1787, the Constitution established an ingenious practical system of government that derives its power from “We the People of the United States” and promotes the welfare of all its citizens.
The US Constitution is Composed of the Preamble, Seven Articles, and 27 Amendments.
The First 10 Amendments are Known as the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights defines and protects Citizens’ and States’ rights in relation to the Federal Government, including freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly, among many other rights. Passed by Congress in 1791, the Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the Constitution as a solution to limit government power and protect individual liberties through the Constitution.
The Bill of Rights Contain Many of America’s Most Valued Freedoms.
